Countries that have adopted the euro

The euro banknotes and coins were introduced on 1 January 2002 in the following twelve Member States of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. Meanwhile the euro has been introduced in Slovenia, Slovakia, Malta and Cyprus as well. The euro has also been adopted as legal tender by the tiny states of Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City.

In addition, the euro is legal tender in a number of overseas territories:

  • the French overseas departments ofGuadeloupe , French Guiana , Martiniqueand RĂ©union
  • the French oversees territories ofMayotteand Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon
  • the French Southern andAntarcticTerritories
  • the Portuguese overseas territories ofMadeiraand theAzores 
  • the Spanish Canary Islands


In other countries, including Andorra, Montenegro and Kosovo, the euro has not been adopted as legal tender but is nevertheless used in payment.
