A Quick Check

Look, feel and tilt

How can you quickly check a euro banknote? Just use the simple look, feel and tilt method.

€ 20 Back

First Series

  • 1 Watermark

Hold the banknote up against the light. The building and the value numeral 20 should appear in the watermark. The numeral should be lighter. If you put the banknote on a dark surface, the watermark, especially the value numeral, should be darker.

  • 2 Raised print

Run your fingers across the front of the banknote. The striped area at the top of the banknote, the large numeral 20 and the line reading ©BCE ECB EZB EKT EKP can be felt clearly.

  • 3 Hologram

If you tilt the banknote, the value numeral 20 will change to the € symbol. Note the colour effects.

  • 4 Glossy stripe

If you look at the back of the banknote and tilt it, a gold-coloured glossy stripe will appear. It changes from golden yellow to almost fully transparent. It shows the value 20 and the € symbol.
