Rock Garden (2018) – Wineke Gartz

Wineke Gartz

From 16 November to 27 December 2018, the Art Gallery of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) will host the exhibition “Rock Garden” by Wineke Gartz.

Especially for this solo exhibition, Wineke (1968) has created a spatial installation featuring video projections, drawings and objects inspired by the architecture of DNB's headquarters and its surroundings. The rocks around the building prosaically serve to prevent ram raids, but Gartz poetically associates them with prehistoric times and wildlife. That is how she brings nature inside. At the same time the walls show video footage of people, streets and the hustle and bustle in and around Amsterdam. All this is framed by drawings. She thus transforms the Art Gallery to a monumental tableau vivant that envelops the visitor entirely. Wineke takes us all on board her quest for harmony between man and technology, economy and nature. As an accomplished DJ, she performs magic using state-of-the art multimedia, whereas the sky and cloudscapes of her composition unequivocally show traces of 17th century landscape painters such as Jacob van Ruisdael. The experience submerges us in a multidimensional stratification, numerous layers of space and time.

The exhibition is open on weekdays from 16 November to 27 December 2018 in DNB’s Art Gallery, Westeinde 1 in Amsterdam, by appointment only. Appointments can be made by email (kunstcommissie@dnb.nl) or telephone (+31 20 524 2183).
Visitors will be asked to show valid proof of identity.
