On Friday 2 July, DNB President Klaas Knot unveiled an art installation on the Frederiksplein square, together with local residents. The idea behind the installation is for De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) to stay connected with the neighbourhood and passers-by during its three-year absence from the Frederiksplein due to the renovation of its head office. The art installation was commissioned by DNB and designed by alumni of the Utrecht School of the Arts.
Studio Mieke Meijer supported the design process and realised the work.
The artwork is intended to inspire local residents and passers-by, and to engage interest in the themes that are central to DNB's work.
The temporary art installation is intended as a gesture of goodwill towards local residents, and offers them a platform where they can come together. Through this project, DNB hopes to add aesthetic value to a part of the square that is now used less often.
The installation is robust and sustainable, with rich illustrations that will change every six months, inviting visitors to linger in the square for a bit and to return to discover new elements.
Contemporary art has the power to visualise current societal issues, and to show what issues are at stake. The installation is entitled Times of Growth, and serves to contribute to the dialogue about “growth” and what it means for us and for our society. Growth is about so much more than economics; it is inseparable from nature and society.
Growth is also an important theme for DNB, and illustrates the multifaceted dilemmas and considerations that it faces in its tasks as the independent central bank of the Netherlands.
The installation fits in well with DNB's vision for its art collection. At the heart of this vision is an invitation for people to explore their own references. This installation also encourages residents and passers-by to reflect on current societal themes.
This is in line with the development of DNB into an open organisation that connects with its environment and seeks dialogue, in keeping with its public task. The installation thus serves as a prelude to the public zone of the renovated building on Frederiksplein.
The renovated premises of the Nederlandsche Bank on the Frederiksplein will open in 2023. Everyone is invited to contribute to the discussion about what value means, about prosperity, but also to reflect together on sustainability – the new gold. People will be welcome to be inspired by debate, art, knowledge and information, or just to stop by for a cup of coffee.
