Ambitious climate policies are necessary
In the summer of 2018, the House of Representatives of the Netherlands supported a proposal for a Climate Act. The Climate Act stipulates that by 2050, greenhouse gas emissions must have been reduced by 95% relative to their 1990 level. In addition, the government is aiming to reduce emissions by 49% in 2030. This requires ambitious climate policies. A major part of carbon emissions in the Netherlands is attributable to the corporate sector. The chart below shows that compared with the European average, a major part of greenhouse gas emissions in the Netherlands is attributable to a small number of industry sectors. This is related to the high proportion of fossil fuels in the energy mix of the responsible corporations and the relatively high emission-intensive products that they produce.
