The Netherlands is benefiting from the strong demand in emerging markets. Since the millennium, Dutch exports to emerging economies have almost tripled to EUR 67 billion.
World trade recovered rapidly after the contraction in 2009 and stood at pre-credit crisis level at end-2010 (Chart 1). Emerging economies are the engine of recovery in world trade. Emerging economies’ trade increased by 13% in 2010 and is now well above its previous peak in 2008 (Chart 1). Developed economies’ trade volume expanded by over 10% last year, bringing it 'only' to its level at the beginning of 2007.
