In love, but not yet willing to commit
A considerable part of consumers prefer using their debit card over making cash payments, but overestimate the extent to which they actually pay with it: they have fallen in love with their debit card, but in practice are still committed to notes and coins. Dutch consumers are very satisfied with paying by pin, including compared with cash payments. Seven out of ten consumers indicate they prefer paying by debit card rather than in cash (Figure 1a). However, in practice consumers pay in cash more often than by pin (Figure 1b), even in the face of various efforts by banks and retailers to encourage debit card use.
