Campaign increased debit card usage by 2%
In the Netherlands, banks and retailers together launched a public campaign in 2007 with the aim of encouraging the use of debit cards among consumers. The DNB study suggests that it led to 2% additional debit card payments, on top of trend-based growth already observed (see Chart 1). In total, 352 million additional debit card payments were made between 2007 and 2013. The campaign's impact became clear only after four years, when it influenced consumer behaviour not only during periods with campaign activities, but also afterwards.
