While they generally prefer debit card payments for reasons of safety and costs, retailers hardly ever manage their customers' payment behaviour to reduce their own cash volumes. Customer preferences appear to be leading, and retailers consider offering various payment options good customer service. Further, cash offers various advantages over other payment instruments. In practical terms, purchases paid in cash represent sales. Also for instance suppliers can readily be paid from the till. In addition, cash is a good alternative should there be a payment terminal malfunction. Emotionally, cash is tangible and is perceived as remuneration.
