Fewer cash payments
Between 2015 and 2016 the number of cash payments at points of sale dropped from 3.19 billion to 2.95 billion. The total value of these payments fell from EUR 40 billion to EUR 38 billion. Consumers increasingly pay for their purchases by debit card. The number of debit card payments increased from 3.23 billion to 3.57 billion. The total value of these payments was up from EUR 93 billion to EUR 97 billion. Consumers increasingly choose to pay contactless, with their debit card or smartphone. The rise of contactless payment helps explain the sustained increase in debit card payments.
