(32) Featured statistic: EUR 1 trillion

In January 2006 the amount outstanding in loans of banks in the  Netherlands totalled just over EUR 1 trillion to residents of the whole euro area.

Lending for house purchase accounted for more than a third (38%) of this amount. Almost a quarter of the loans were granted to the corporate sector (24%). The share of loans to financial institutions – banks, insurance corporations, pension funds and other financial institutions (such as financing companies) – made up close to a third (30%). 

The financial sector saw the sharpest growth in credit last year: loans to pension funds and insurance corporations rose by 30% and loans to other financial institutions by 20%. The amount outstanding in loans for house purchase increased by more than 10%.
