Featured statistic: 54 tonnes
Date 20 March 2007
DNB sold 54 tonnes of gold last year, bringing its gold holdings to around 640 tonnes at end-December 2006.
Dutch gold holdings currently have a value of around EUR 10 billion and form a major component of official reserve assets. The sharp rise in the price of gold has boosted the value of the gold holdings over the past two years, whereas the volume (in tonnes) has been steadily declining since the early 1990s owing to gold sales.
Fifteen central banks – including DNB – made agreements on their future gold sales in the Central Bank Gold Agreement. Under the first agreement, DNB has sold 235 tonnes of gold between October 1999 and October 2004. Under the current terms, DNB may sell 165 tonnes of gold between October 2004 and October 2009. Some 136.5 of this amount has already been sold in 2005 and 2006.
