In the context of a number of foreign acquisitions of Dutch companies, some media are speaking of the 'clearance sale' of the Netherlands. But what exactly changes when a Dutch company falls into foreign hands?

Over the past few years, non-residents have steadily expanded their direct shareholdings in Dutch quoted companies, to around 76% at end-2007. Only a limited proportion of the control over large Dutch companies is still exercised by Dutch residents. In this respect little changes when a large Dutch company is taken over by a single foreign party.
