Public awareness of the Deposit Guarantee is essential to ensure its intended stabilising effect. The more people are aware of the scheme, the smaller the chance that a bank run will start when a bank gets into difficulty.

Increasing public awareness

Research (2019) shows that 58% of the Dutch are familiar with the Deposit Guarantee Scheme. This means there is room for improvement, also in comparison with deposit guarantee schemes in other countries. In cooperation with the financial sector, we will work to increase public awareness of the deposit guarantee scheme in the next few years, for example by more actively providing information about the Deposit Guarantee to the public.

In February 2019, DNB published a (Dutch-language) consultation document on increasing public awareness of the deposit guarantee scheme. Based on this document, we started working with the sector on our strategy to increase public awareness of the deposit guarantee in general and its specific characteristics in particular. The allocation of roles that we envisage is one in which DNB is responsible for the content and the process, while the sector acts as a distribution partner.

Following the consultation, we set up an expert group with DGS experts and communication experts from the sector. Together with this expert group and supported by a communication consultancy firm, we are working on an active public information campaign. In early 2020, we published a progress report on our efforts to increase public awareness. We plan to start the public information campaign in 2021, including a new website (www.depositogarantie.nl), a social media campaign and a harmonised DGS toolkit for the sector.
