Dutch households hold €3.2 billion in crypto-assets with Dutch service providers

News

At the end of June 2026, Dutch households held €3.2 billion worth of crypto-assets via Dutch crypto-asset service providers, according to new figures published for the first time by DNB. That is roughly equivalent to 1.4% of their total investments in shares, investment funds and bonds. By far the largest proportion of crypto holdings consisted of bitcoin and other unbacked crypto-assets.

At De Nederlandsche Bank, we independently compile statistics on the Dutch financial sector and economy. This article is based on these statistics. More information on our statistics and all dashboards can be found on our Statistics homepage.

First figures on direct crypto holdings held with Dutch providers

The new figures provide the first insight into the direct crypto holdings with Dutch crypto-asset service providers (CASPs). These companies offer services and activities such as the safekeeping and management of cryptocurrencies, portfolio management or the provision of a crypto-asset trading platform. Well-known Dutch CASPs include Bitvavo, Coinmerce and Blox.

Crypto-assets held by Dutch nationals with foreign CASPs, or held directly by these investors via hardware wallets (‘cold wallets’) or software wallets (‘hot wallets’), are excluded from these statistics, as are the Dutch indirect crypto investments which DNB has previously reported on.

Bitcoin and other unbacked crypto-assets dominate

Virtually all of households’ crypto holdings held via CASPs (also totalling €3.2 billion, rounded) consist of unbacked crypto-assets, of which Bitcoin (€1.5 billion) and Ethereum (€0.3 billion) are the most popular.

Backed crypto-assets (stablecoins), which are designed to maintain a stable value against, for example, the dollar or the euro, account for less than 1% of households’ crypto holdings.

By way of comparison: at the end of June 2026, Dutch households had invested a total of €234.2 billion in securities (listed shares, investment funds and bonds).
