Private markets are gaining prominence as a relevant part of the financial system and are playing an ever-greater role in the financing of the real economy. The aggregate size of private markets has grown rapidly over the past decade, both worldwide, in Europe and in the Netherlands (FSB, 2025; ECB, 2024). This offers benefits for the financing of the economy by making long-term capital available for innovation, growth sectors and capital-intensive investment, and it reduces reliance on bank financing.
