Hilbers worked alternately for De Nederlandsche Bank and the International Monetary Fund for 40 years, moving several times from the Netherlands to Washington and back again. For the past four years, he was Executive Director at the IMF, and in that role represented the interests of the 16 countries in the IMF’s Dutch-Belgian constituency. His strong commitment to Ukraine, which led, among other things, to a special support programme of over $15 billion, earned Hilbers much appreciation worldwide.

Hilbers retired on 14 February from Nyenrode Business Universiteit, where he was a professor. At the IMF, he retired somewhat earlier. At DNB, he served as Director of the Supervision Policy and Financial Stability divisions between 2009 and 2019. DNB’s Executive Board nominated Paul Hilbers for a royal honour, supported by policymakers from around the globe. Hilbers may now call himself a Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Recipients of this rare honour must have rendered service of international or even global importance.
