Majority of consumers aware of advice on cash for emergencies

58% of consumers actually keep this amount on hand. Of those who have less cash than advised, one in three say they "haven't gotten around to it yet".

In May 2025, the NFPS advised households, shops and other physical outlets to be prepared for situations where electronic payments may fail for up to 72 hours, for example because of disruptions in PIN payments, ATMs or online banking.
Besides having enough cash on hand, it is also advisable to have more than one means of payment. Those who usually pay by phone or smartwatch are advised to also keep a physical debit card at home or on them.
The recommended cash amounts were calculated by the National Institute for Family Finance Information (Nibud) (in Dutch). The opinion is part of the central government’s broader preparation plan. Preferably, households should keep their cash in a mix of notes and coins. They can build up the amount gradually, for example by setting aside change at regular intervals.
