As a member of DNB’s Executive Board, Ter Weel will be responsible for managing five divisions: Economic Policy & Research, Financial Stability, Financial Markets, Statistics, and Payments, Cash & Market Infrastructure. He will also act as deputy to the President of DNB on the Governing Council and General Council of the European Central Bank (ECB).
Finance minister Eelco Heinen nominated Ter Weel on the recommendation of DNB’s Supervisory Board. Ter Weel succeeds Olaf Sleijpen, who was appointed President of DNB from 1 July 2025.
Olaf Sleijpen notes: “We are delighted to welcome Bas ter Weel to our board. Bas brings broad and deep macroeconomic knowledge and expertise in socio-economic, financial and economic policy. His extensive experience as a researcher, administrator and adviser, including at SEO Amsterdam Economics and the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, make him ideally suited to take charge of the Monetary Affairs portfolio. His fresh outside perspective and connecting leadership style will make an important contribution to the further development of DNB.”
Bas ter Weel (b. 1975) is an economist and has been the General Director of SEO Amsterdam Economics since 2016. In addition, he is a part-time professor of economics at the University of Amsterdam and a Crown-appointed member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER). Previously, he was the deputy director of the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis and held various scientific and executive positions. He holds a PhD in economics from Maastricht University.
