The data shows the 10 largest countries by value of card payments, covering the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom and the United States. For point-of-sale payments, the country is determined by the location of the physical payment terminal. For online purchases, it is determined by the merchant’s registered address.
Sectors
The sectors are made up of firms engaged in similar economic activities. A sector may therefore consist of several types of firms offering similar products or services.
Card payments are categorised into the following six sectors:
Retail: the sale of various physical and digital goods.
Food: this sector includes, among others, supermarkets, bakeries and specialist food shops.
Hospitality sector: hotels, restaurants, cafés and other providers of food and drink for immediate consumption.
Services: personal and business services, including consultancy, repairs and maintenance, leisure, culture and sport, and rental services.
Fuel & charging: attended and unattended petrol stations, as well as electric charging stations.
Transport: the transport of people and goods, such as public transport, airlines and delivery services.
